background
  • before you are sophie, you are little peach. that is your baby-bump name your parents come up with. and when you are born your grandparents hold you in their arms, all careful and tender. your grandfather grins at your plump cheeks and gummy mouth with his own gummy smile. he decides to call you bok seung-ah, peach in korean, because he was funny like that. your grandmother thinks it absolutely adorable while your parents...well, they didn't think your grandparents would take the name literally. you're mildly embarrassed by it growing up.

  • you live in littleton, colorado for most of your childhood. and then your mother is relocated to california for work. everything that is familiar to you, you leave behind and start fresh. you adjust as much as anyone would expect of a child. you cry and sulk but obey because you don't really have a say in the matter. your father tries to assure you, tells you that it'll be fun and exciting to go to a new place. you don't share his enthusiasm.

  • los angeles is busy and crowded and school's definitely different, but you learn to accept it slowly but surely. after two years you move to peachtree where you start eighth grade and have to adjust all over again. but at least this time you're prepared for it...and it's not terribly far.

  • your mother is the bread-winner of the house what with her somewhat affluent background and well-paying job. she is your role model but also a standard that you feel you'll never reach. she is both comforting and daunting. she is critical because she understands that it's a difficult world out there for females and she wants to prepare you to be on top. of course you don't understand that as a child. you love your mother, but you often have thoughts that maybe, maybe you were switched at birth with some other obedient, smart, everything-your-mother-wants-in-a-child. some things just don't mesh. you don't have her brains. you're not as talented or outgoing or independent as her. you don't excel in your studies. you're just average. your mother's disappointed face, quickly hidden behind a smile, is more of a slap to the face than anything else.

  • you find your talent in gymnastics. your mother signs you up because it had always been a dream of hers since she was a little girl. you're reluctant initially but then you find how it just clicks well. moving with your body requires less thought, more instinct with your movements and how it syncs to the music. other girls struggle with a routine or exercise but you adapt quickly. now, at the dinner table, your mother listens with rapt attention as you describe how your coach complimented you on your ribbon technique and tumbles. your father nods approvingly.

  • when you get chosen to perform one of the floor routines, jealousy rears its ugly head. the other girls band together, snicker behind your back. slow sophie, stupid sophie they say. gloomy little sophie. your mother probably paid to get you a spot, they whisper. your father's words can be comforting only so much, deafened to the taunting laughter and fiendish words. eventually your mother offers you a choice. a test. you can quit or you can continue. when your coach says it's a shame you won't be performing, your mother smiles thinly and explains that you have other urgent responsibilities.

  • middle school gym class is where you find volleyball. it's mostly lobbing the ball back and forth with more tumbling balls than successful passes. even though your forearms get sore after awhile it's fun. you're good at receiving and passing. your friend invites you to her youth volleyball team after school at the local community center. memories from before flood back and you're anxious of being in a similar scenario again. you overthink, overanalyze, try to force yourself to be good but not so good that other girls will get jealous. but it's instinct for your body to move first before you can think what to do. less thinking, more doing. it's impulsive and disorientating and absolutely liberating.

  • you learn to accommodate your thinking to strategies and techniques, things that can help your teammates get one more point. you find a niche with these other girls who share a passion for sport. they welcome you, and in return you learn to welcome newcomers who have been in the same position as you once upon a time.

  • you attend ridgeview high school with its plethora of activities available for you to try out. of course your first choice is the volleyball team but you're eager to see what else will perk your interests. your mother is compliant with your passion, at least for now, as long as it doesn't interfere with academia. you're uncertain of your future and secretly you're unsure if you want to follow with whatever expectations your mother has for you beyond high school. but that moment will come at its own time. at least, for now, things are going to be okay.
