come back to me like you would before you said its not that easy

He didn’t like places like this. Social events gave him anxiety, but there was something brave about hiding behind his masquerade mask. Dustin walked through the crowds of students and chaperones alike, pushing his way through congregations here and there. At this ball he had no idea who was who, and nobody was really talking loud enough for him to hear. Not that Dustin would have able to, he wasn’t exactly Mister Popularity around here.

Originally, he had been approached to photograph the event, as he was a prime contributor to the yearbook and newspaper in terms of photography, but a close friend had encouraged him to attend the party as a guest instead. Still it would have been a lie to say he felt comfortable in his own skin right now. The stuffy, formal suit, which apparently Dustin had gotten the wrong memo.

He looked like he belonged to an actual masquerade party, except from the eighteen hundred while everyone else looked like they at least came form this century. His mask was barely enough to hide his stiffness as he walked around. Luckily it was dark, and few noticed him. The committee had done a great job of decorating the place. There was a slow but romantic feeling in the air and someone had tastefully chosen a Taylor Swift playlist, her earlier songs of course. Dustin couldn’t help but feel like he was Romeo from Romeo and Juliet, except he didn’t have a Juliet. But he had himself and he wasn’t going anywhere near poisons, so he was still doing better than his Shakespearean counterpart.

Naturally he felt himself drawn to the wall, finding himself next to the punch and settling in. Dustin wanted to mingle, but as secure as he felt behind his mask, the thought of introducing himself to other masked strangers was somehow even worse than normal. Besides, here he was cloaked by the shadows of the lights and large velvet curtains. A voice came over the speakers. “Alright ladies and gentlemen, its time to find your significant other and prepare for the first slow dance of the night.”

Dustin’s eyes widened, but he stood firmly in place. Nobody wanted to dance with him, and besides everyone was already with someone. It was just him, standing alone by the wall while the others moved towards the center of the dance floor, guys and girls clinging tightly to each other as a slow lovey dovey song about red lips classic things began playing. Well. Yeah. Just him and the wall he supposed.

It had been a long time since she had gone to a celebratory event. At first, she didn't want to go but the idea of missing out on something deemed fun by the rest of her friends had prompted her to join in. Her mother had been ecstatic at the idea of their daughter going and brought the girl to shop for a dress.

They had spent a good three to four hours jumping between various shops just looking for dresses, with Lysander in tow, until they found the perfect dress for Ophelia. It reminded her of the setting sun with its shades of orange and yellow and the sheen layer of the dress gave it a soft touch to it, giving the dress a more muted look that matched Ophelia's bright yet gentle personality.

Still, it was a completely new thing for her. Ophelia had never worn anything that exposed her shoulders; the only thing that was around her neck was a pearl necklace, one that had belonged to her mother. Her heels clicked clacked against the ground as she made her way to the ballroom. Once she has selected a mask, she puts it on and retreats to the side, away from the dance floor.

An announcement comes over the speakers, saying that they should make haste to find their partners. Ophelia watches as many people pair up with their respective partners or friends for the night. Not too far from here, she could see someone in a rather grandiose suit for the night and alone, unmoving.

What a perfect opportunity to befriend someone new.

"Hello," says the girl chirpily as she draws near to the lone man. She felt that she was a little overdressed for the occasion but her mother insisted that she should be that way so she could sweep everyone else off of their feet. "Would you like to dance with me?"

come back to me like you would before you said its not that easy

"Nh?!" Dustin was startled. He hadn't expected anyone to approach so he hadn't seen the young, fiery looking girl make her way next to him. Contrary to his cold, black and blue attire this girl was a blaze upon the floor. Dustin took a moment to stare at her while he stumbled, pulling himself off against the wall awkwardly. "Oh hello."

There was no further response from him after that. He stood there stiffly, awkwardly, his honey colored lenses staring out from underneath his mask. Well, this was unexpected. Dustin hadn't even begun to think of the possibility that he would be out on the dance floor tonight, much less with someone who looked like they had dressed to match him.

Visions of ballroom dances from Disney movies swarmed his head. Cinderella gliding gracefully in a vision of glass. Emma Watson looking dreamily into the Beast's eyes. And now this, Dustin staring at her. Except he lacked the suave and grace those Disney princes had. Still, he made a push, what other chance would he get? Behind this mask, he didn't feel like Dustin. He was someone else. Someone charming, confident and strong.

"Please, I would love to." The voice that came out surprised him. Dustin sounded so affirmative, so bold and smooth. He hardly felt like himself, no he wasn't himself. He was a masked Prince and this girl was his Princess. Or something like that.

Deciding against lingering too long and facing the threat of him chickening out, Dustin reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her towards the dance floor. He was determined as he politely, moved others aside, stopping only when he found himself standing in the dead center, underneath the chandelier.

He was no professional, but he was enough to take someone a romantic dance. Once he stopped, he turned to face his mysterious Juliet and took a deep breath. "Okay, uh, put your hand, I mean..." No talking. Just doing. He grasped her arms tightly.

Ophelia giggled just a little. "It's alright. It's my first time coming to such an event—" she looks at the people around her, observing how couples positioned their hands. Her fingers curled around his wrist to guide his hands to the correct positions: his right hand should be placed on her back, near her waist; his other hand is meant to take her hand within his own.

"There you go," she chirps in a sing-song manner, finishing it off with her left hand resting on his shoulder. He had been full of confidence when he had agreed, only to stumble over his own actions when he displayed uncertainty as to how to carry this out — Ophelia found it rather endearing. "I think that's how it likes. If it's not correct, we'll still dance and have fun."

She follows the beat of the song and steps side to side, her body swaying. The brunette finds herself humming along to the glorious melody of the song. In the midst of everything, she becomes painfully aware of how much she doesn't feel like herself: the exposure of her shoulders and collarbone to the cold air makes her feel naked and the fact that her chocolate locks have been tied up into a neat updo did little to help.

Brown irises glanced at honey ones, searching for some form of reassurance before she directed her gaze downwards, noting that they were dressed in colours that were on opposite ends of the spectrum, quite like fire and ice — that was the first thing that came to her mind.

"I'm Ophelia," she introduces herself in hushed tones, ignoring the fact that they were all in masks. "You don't have to say your name if you don't feel comfortable. It's just what I like to do."

come back to me like you would before you said its not that easy

He didn't really have anything to say. Or maybe he wanted to say something but Dustin couldn't get his mouth moving. It was a bit of a complicated solution, but at least he was keeping up with the pace. Not that a slow dance was supposed to be much of a workout. It was his thoughts that were getting to him, causing him to stand there stiffly, awkwardly, barely moving across the floor as he tried his best not to bump into anyone else.

And then she spoke, and Dustin's eyes widened. Wait, what was that? She asked something. She gave him her name. The song went to a chorus. Someone beside him said watch it bud as he stumbled and bumped into another dancing pair. As he turned around to apologize Dustin suddenly lost his footing. The blond turned back to warn his dance partner, but it was too late.

In what seemed like slow motion Dustin's foot raised before clamping down on those of his companion's. Immediately he pulled pack, dropping both his from her shoulders, cheeks turning a deep shade of red. As he did the guy behind himself collided into him as well causing Dustin to stumbled forward, turning around and awkwardly muttering a series of "Sorry! Sorry sorry," before turning back to face his companion and giving her the same set of lines, bowing and awkwardly nodding his head up and down as if somehow that helped the situation.

Oh god, there was no escape. He was a mess on the dancefloor. Where had those years of dance training in front of the television to Dancing with the Stars gone? If this had been a competition Dustin felt like he wouldn't have just been booted off, but possibly expelled all together, which was really a reasonable risk considering the principal was probably watching him stumble around like a drunken fool.

Ophelia lets out a pained cry – everyone turns to stare at them at the sound – and immediately clams her lips together, her cry reduced to a whimper instead. She had seen everything in action and knew it had been a mere accident. The masked man standing before her bows, apologies spilling forth from his lips and she merely waves all those words off, shaking her own head.

"Hey, it's okay. Just help me to the side please?" she requests, cursing the existence of open-toed heels right this very moment: why was there a need to expose herself to such danger in exchange for beauty? Thank God it hadn't been another girl; Ophelia was sure her toes would be crushed from the force being concentrated into a smaller surface area – like stilettos.

At least she had made a new friend while they were at it. It was understandable if he didn't want to reveal his own name; it is a masquerade ball they were at. She looks at the blonde-haired man and smiles sheepishly, "It's okay. Accidents happen and it's not as if we were that great at dancing," Ophelia does her best attempt to reassure her new friend that it's fine.
