trouble never looked so god damn fine

alaska sighed, reclining in her chair beside the community pool. she watched the young and old alike swim their rounds, all with varying amounts of talent and training in their movements.
there was a young man about her age who was trying his best to make the front crawl work for him, for example, while an older woman passed him round for round with a perfectly performed breaststroke. it was admirable, honestly.

the older guests were usually alaska's favorites at the pool. they didn't jump of the edge (which was strictly forbidden, with countless signs explaining so in bold letters), didn't fool around and stayed in their lanes.
and they were usually pretty nice too, greeting alaska when they came and went. most of them were regulars, while the younger people often just came once or twice for a swim. not all, but most of them.

now that winter was coming, alaska spent most of her time at the community pool again - so she knew the regulars pretty well. whether she was there to work, with her team or to swim for herself (which rarely happened with how much training they had, but sometimes only swimming could help alaska deal with the stress of school).

the lifeguard was about to stand up to make a round of the pool to stretch her legs when someone plopped down on the resting bench beside the lifeguard's niche. they were panting and still wet from just getting out of the pool. "you okay?" alaska asked with a grin, watching the exhausted swimmer regain their breathing. she knew the feeling. to her, it was the best one in the world.
"looks like you had a good workout, man, i wish i could jump in too." the lifeguard added a fake-saddened sigh. she did want to swim again, now that training was finally picking up again for the upcoming competitions she could barely get enough of the water, but she liked her work too.
and it was nice to watch other swimming enthusiasts. it reminded alaska of her childhood years, before she'd began swimming competitively and done it solely for the fun of it.

School was tough some days. Arata didn't really mind as such but relaxation could be pretty hard to come by among all the homework and school stress. While he did like messing around sometimes, the pinkette did focus on his work to make sure that he still got decent grades and didn't fail any subjects. Then there was work on top of that... well somedays he just needed a few minutes hours to just forget about all that.

Which happened to be today.

After deciding to take the walking route to the pool, he had already warmed up enough to just get changed into his swimmers and just straight into the pool. Not literally of course, that was dangerous and he'd rather not hurt himself. No he lowered himself in just to make sure. There were plenty of kids around who just jumped in but he didn't want to be one of them and get in trouble.

The water was nice and cool, which was what he had been hoping for honestly. But coming by himself really hadn't been a good move at all. Letting out a sigh Arata would look around him for anyone he might've recognized. Someone from the school that he'd seen or something like that. Anything was better than being there on his own.

His gaze turned to one of the lifeguards. Were they on duty? Oh well. It wouldn't matter either way would it? She would totally be allowed to talk to swimmers. So he pulled himself out of the water and sat down near her. At least conversation was going to be easy!

"I'm fine!" He said, offering a smile as he ruffled his own hair and tried to regain his breath. "You're not allowed to jump in? That doesn't seem fair. It looks like you could use a chance to cool off."

the student volunteers had been ordered to leave the school to track down missing students when their candygrams could not be delivered. so, it was a silly sight to see a boy in a candy-cane costume awkwardly waddle across the pool side, attempting to avoid slipping.

"a-arata williams!" he yelled, "candy-gram delivery!" he finally made his way over to the fringe, dropping him the message and the bag of candy, before taking a couple deep breaths and leaving.
